Some ingredients are being put into plant based milk that is making it unhealthy.
Ingredients are being added to certain brands of plant based milk that make what was once believed a safe milk alternative unsafe. Among them are sugar, calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, potassium citrate, magnesium phosphate, tricalcium phosphate, disodium phosphate and carrageenan. Consumer Reports stated that “[a] high intake of these additives may increase the risk of kidney disease, heart disease, and bone loss, especially when calcium is low.” Also, “[c]arrageenan may trigger inflammation in people who suffer from colitis or other inflammatory bowel disorders.” Moreover, phosphates have been said to cause vascular damage and to induce aging processes. Thus, many plant based milk brands have come under fire for adding these ingredients to their milk.
Another questionable ingredient found in plant based milk, among other products, is “natural flavors.” The term “natural flavor” is usually used for ingredients that were synthetically processed or purified in a lab but from a natural source. Essentially, its a chemical originally found in food that is enhanced then added back to the food resulting in a short intense flavor that quickly dissipates so you come back for more.
Now all plant based milk brands do not add such ingredients. In fact, there are quite a few options available that don’t. They are usually a bit more expensive, but healthy alternatives always are. Here are a few for your consideration.

Aside from buying milk you also have the option of making your own. This gives you the advantage of knowing 1st hand what’s going into your milk. It also, gives you the benefit of knowing that its safe and healthy. If you choose to buy your plant based milk just be sure to read the label and put your health and well-being first.
