DIY Review – All Purpose Cleaners

Conventional cleaners are pushing more and more people towards sustainable, non-toxic and chemical free products for their homes. We want products free of formaldehyde, chlorine and chlorine compounds, glutaraldehyde, and other harsh ingredients used in cleaners. These ingredients are notorious for causing skin, eye, respiratory and sinus irritation. The fact is, conventional cleaning products might actually do more harm than good.

Perhaps its time to switch to products made from natural, safe, and effective ingredients. Here are some DIY all purpose cleaners that will contribute to a healthier home and planet. This week’s DIY feature goes to Charlotte Willis at veganfoodandliving.com. She has the most amazing all purpose and refrigerator cleaners.

All Purpose Cleaner

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap
  • 2 cups purified water (filtered or boiled and cooled)
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 tbsp baking soda
  • 5 drops of tea tree oil
  • 5 drops of orange oil
  • 5 drops of eucalyptus oil
  • 5 drops of lemongrass or lemon oil

Instructions

  • Simply combine together in a spray bottle, and clean, scrub and buff until you can see your face in the reflection of your bathroom tiles.

This natural all purpose cleaner is absolutely delightful. It’s quick and easy to make. It makes a significant amount and besides that a little goes a long way. It cleans effectively minus the harsh chemical smell. The essential oils give your home the most refreshing scent throughout. I use this to clean the kitchen, and bathroom. Additionally, I use it to remove dust from wood surfaces like bookshelves and nightstands. It’s so effective that you forget that it’s all natural.

Fridge Cleaner

Ingredients

  • ½ spray bottle of purified water
  • 10 drops of lemon essential oil
  • 1 tbsp bicarbonate of soda
  • ½ cup white wine vinegar

Instructions

  • Simply mix these all together and spray away any nasties.
  • Finally, for a simple tip, try keeping a bowl of bicarbonate of soda infused with fresh lemon juice in a corner of your fridge. This’ll act as an odour-absorber for those late-night pizza leftovers or oops-I-forgot-about-that coconut yoghurt(esque) pot.

This fridge cleaner is a simple yet very effective way to keep your fridge sparkly and bacteria free. If you want to ensure that your food is free of those pesky biohazards like Listeria monocytogenes, while also being free of harmful chemicals give this recipe a try. You never know what may be lurking about.
