2020 Zero Waste Packaging Trends

2020 seems to be the year for zero waste packaging trends. If you haven’t already noticed food, beauty and numerous personal care goods are dressed in packaging that is more eco-friendly and sustainable than ever. Several big name companies, some of which include, L’Oreal, Walmart, Target and Burberry have all committed to joining the zero waste movement by making their packaging more sustainable.

Yet, what they’re all talking about doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what’s to come. From paper bottles to edible packaging, companies are becoming more innovative than ever. Here’s what you can expect to see.

Paper Bottles

In 2019, via a joint venture between paper packaging material developer BillerudKorsnäs and bottle manufacturing specialist Alpla, a Danish innovation project, Paboco was launched, which hopes to bring its range of paper bottles to market very soon. While they are still working out a plastic-free lid, the first generation bottles will be partly renewable and fully recyclable.

Edible Packaging

Also on the way is zero-waste, edible packaging. Yes, edible! According to Food Dive, Food industry leaders are already offering edible wrappers for sandwiches, cookies, ice cream bars and other individually wrapped foods made from natural materials such as potato, rice paper, seaweed, wax-coated sugar and tomatoes.

Repurpose

Meanwhile, packaging that can be repurposed is also becomming more popular. In fact, cult millennial beauty brand Glossier, created a pink bubble wrap Ziploc pouch that was so fancied by customers that they launched it as a purchasable make up bag.

I Dissolve

Next, British outdoor apparel brand, Finisterre, is the first fashion brand to use garment bags that literally dissolve in water. Yes! They are made from the Aquapak polymer, Hydropol. The polymer is oil based and is engineered to dissolve in water at temperatures between 40-70 degrees or break down in anaerobic conditions to leave carbon dioxide, water and biomass.

So stay on the lookout for these 2020 zero waste packaging trends. Companies are joining the movement in record numbers. From the food industry to beauty and apparel brands zero waste packaging is definitely going down!
