Let’s see if zero – low alcohol beverages are the drink of the future…
Also known as NOLO, non or low-alcohol beer, wine and spirits are beverages with little or no alcohol content. It aims to reproduce the taste without the inebriating effects of standard alcoholic brews.
NOLO beer is hitting the mainstream and is poised to be a serious player in the industry. Beer Hawk reported that over the course of one year revenue in the UK for NOLO beer totalled £57 million. What’s noteworthy is that though this only represents less than 1% of the entire industry, it’s a 39% increase on the previous year.
Beer Hawk also reported a shift in attitudes among people aged 16-24. Younger people seem to have an inclination toward being more health-conscious. Thus, they show signs of being less likely to binge drink, which shows promise for NOLO brands.
This trend is also gaining traction internationally. Spain and Germany are leading the way. In fact, as many as 1 in 15 beers consumed in Germany are now non-alcoholic.
For the longest time most didn’t feel that NOLO’s were worth tasting. Now that some NOLO’s come pretty close to near-beer consumers are becoming increasingly more open to try it.
