The Most Nutritious Tomato Varieties

It’s gardening season and the perfect time to learn about the most nutritious tomato varieties. There are more than 7,500 varieties of tomatoes. While they all offer you a wealth of nutritious value, there are some that offer more than others, primarily the heirloom varieties.

Here are some of the most nutritious tomato varieties.

Double Rich

The Double Rich tomato is noted for containing twice the amount of vitamin C compared to other varieties, boasting 50-60 units of Vitamin C per fruit. The Double Rich has a solid, meaty, medium-sized deep red globe shape.

Brandywine

The Brandywine contains the four major carotenoids, including large amounts of lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant. They’re also high in vitamins A and D, as well as potassium. They are non-acidic, with an excellent, robust tomato flavor. Brandywine tomatoes are large, plump beefsteak tomatoes with thin skin that is deep red in color.

Black Plum

Black Plum tomatoes are similar to roma tomatoes in shape, being elongated and oval-shaped. They offer a tasty tangy-sweet flavor, but have high sugar and acid levels compared to other varieties. Black Plum tomatoes are widely known for their outstanding antioxidant content as well as their rich vitamin C and A content, which is important for healthy eyes, skin, bones and teeth.

Goliath

Goliath tomatoes are a good source of dietary fiber, minerals, anti-oxidants, phyto-chemicals and vitamins. They’ve been shown to be helpful in protecting against some forms of cancer, heart disease and for promoting bone health and weight loss. The Goliath tomato has a classic beefsteak shape and flavor with a light red color.

Health Kick

The Health Kick tomato is one of THE most healthy varieties. It is packed with 50% more of the beneficial antioxidant lycopene compared to the other varieties.

Sungold Cherry

Sungold cherry tomatoes have valuable amounts of beta-carotene, which is what gives orange and yellow tomatoes their color and helps neutralize free radicals that may damage human cells. They are rich in vitamin C and offer a good amount of potassium, which is important for regulating blood pressure, nerve function, and muscle control. Sungold cherry tomatoes are exceptionally sweet, having a balance of citrusy tart and sweet savors, with grape and floral notes. Sungold cherry tomatoes are golden-orange in color. They are around one inch in diameter, with thin skin that is near invisible and a tender-firm texture.
