I was an avid fan of the tv show The 100 when it first came out. The acting and writing was impeccable. The story line was consistently intriguing and entertaining. However, things have since changed. The 100 just isn’t the same anymore. Looking at the current season (7) I’m noticing that something has been lost.
The 100 is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi tv series that airs on The CW. It’s about the survivors of a nuclear Armageddon that destroys Earth’s civilizations. Survivors are spread out amongst 12 international space stations in orbit. After three generations have survived this way, the 4,000 survivors living on a space ark of linked stations begin to see their resources dwindle.
So to ensure humanity’s future draconian measures are established and the ark’s leaders send 100 juvenile prisoners back to the planet to test its habitability. Having been raised only in space, the experiences of the youth on the planet which they have never experienced makes for a densely rich and engaging story line. After all, it doesn’t get more interesting than a path into the unknown.
From there the show gets really juicy. It’s definitely binge worthy and may be one of the best shows that you ever watch. However, as the seasons go by it tends to get a bit overwhelming when so many characters and subplots come into play, which starts around season 5. Between keeping up with the build up of flashbacks of each character’s past and tying it to what’s happening in the present as well as it’s connection to so many new characters your head just starts to spin a bit.
Nonetheless, I still love The 100 for all that it has been. I just wish that they’d go back to writing more creatively in a way that expands more intimately on each character rather than throwing in a new character absent the rich story line. The 100 had a great start and a great middle. I’m just not sure how it will end, that is if it sees a season 8. In the meantime, I’ll try to keep up and assess where the writing is going.
