Boba pearls (aka tapioca pearls) are my new obsession. They are made of tapioca starch that comes from the cassava root. No gelatin is used. So boba pearls are completely vegan. They are generally found at the bottom of bubble tea, which is a drink that originated in Taiwan in the ’80s. Since then bubble tea has been growing in popularity.
I first tried bubble tea at a vegan festival. Since then I have been obsessed. I became so obsessed that I went on to buy some boba pearls to make my own homemade versions of bubble tea. I’ve been using them in macha tea, fruit juices, and most of all in creamy drink mixes.
If you’re vegan and decide to try bubble tea know that most bubble tea contains cow’s milk. So be sure to ask for a vegan milk alternative swap.
Overall, as an avid tea lover, boba pearls are my new obsession having boosted my tea game to the next level. I am really enjoying the creative freedom that they are inspiring. I’ve used them in the most delicious fruit juice creations with ingredients ranging from berries to watermelon. It’s also fun to prepare something of a more creamy variety that includes bananas.
Boba pearls are tasty, add the most delicious layer of texture and wholesomeness to my tea and are soul satisfying.
