Being cooped up in the house so much is a breeding ground for bad eating habits. So to ensure that I don’t take on any poor eating habits I’ve been going out of my way to make sure that I am eating mindfully. That means the foods that fill my pantry and refrigerator must be foods that are nourishing.
Now I am a sucker for some good snacks so this is by no means an easy task. However, what I’ve been doing is getting healthy snacks like dried fruit, frozen fruit for smoothies and ingredients for diy yogurt, chia pudding and fruit salads. I’ve also been keeping popcorn kernels and nutritional yeast on hand for salty snack cravings.
By doing this I get to satisfy my cravings while still eating mindfully. Though, being on a plant based diet makes this easy for the most part. However, there are a lot of vegan junk foods out there looking for their next victim. For instance, Oreo cookies are totally vegan, but just because they’re vegan doesn’t mean they’re healthy. That’s why I avoid them like the plague!
Ultimately, eating mindfully is eating to live. You only have this one physical vessel. Therefore, it must be handled with care. So a huge part of self care is just that, caring for your self in a way that includes being mindful of the quality of the foods you are consuming.
The best part is, that eating mindfully is synonymous with eating healthy. For this reason the mind knows what the body needs for nourishment. In fact, it signals you with emotions as to whether or not you’re on the right track. So you’ll feel pride when you’re on the right track. On the other hand, you’ll feel guilt when you go astray, like when you down that pack of Oreos.
Then when the mind can’t get through to you emotionally, it ups the stakes and gets physical. So rather than noticing an emotional signal, you’ll feel fatigue. Then if that doesn’t work you’ll see weight gain, illness or disease. The mind is so determined to ensure your survival that it will go as far as instructing the body to attack itself to alert you of the impending danger of your eating habits.
In fact, nourishment is so crucial to your survival that the mind reminds you at every turn. Hence, eating mindfully is literally the key to your survival. So allow your mind, by way of your emotions, be your guide toward healthy eating. When it speaks be sure to listen and life will be bliss.
