KFC has partnered with Lightlife to produce the KFC vegan chicken sandwich that is now available nationwide in Canada. This comes by popular demand following the initial rollout that took place in November.
In a press release Samantha Redman, chief marketing officer, KFC Canada said, “When we tested Plant-Based KFC by Lightlife late last year, we sold over a month’s worth of sandwiches in six hours.
Along with the vegan chicken sandwich, for a limited time, KFC will offer plant-based chicken popcorn. So August 10 onwards you can order the plant based duo individually, as part of a combo, or as part of a box meal. The plant-based KFC vegan chicken sandwich will be available permanently, while the plant-based KFC Popcorn will be available while supplies last.
Lightlife is one of the O.G.’s of plant based foods. They’ve been offering plant based foods for over 40 years all the while maintaining their status as number one refrigerated plant protein brand in the U.S. So given KFC’s stellar record in the fast food industry this seems to be the perfect pairing.
Previously, KFC trialed the Beyond Meat vegan chicken sandwich in Atlanta, which was hugely successful and sold out in just 5 hours! They also launched the plant-based Imposter Burger made with Quorn in the UK.
Despite the success, previous launches were also met with some resistance from the plant based community. Cooked in the same fryer as meat the plant based community didn’t consider the sandwiches plant based. Hence, with the current launch KFC promises that the Lightlife plant based chicken offering will be prepared in a separate fryer.
So that means that the KFC vegan chicken sandwich now available in Canada is 100% plant based. If you’re near a KFC in Canada stop by and try one out. Be sure to let us know how it goes. We’d love to hear from you.
