Introducing the vegan sausages that make your taste buds say yum…
When it comes to sausage the meatless industry has time and time again nailed it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve fooled the pickiest of meat eaters with meatless sausage. Whether as a stand alone, on pasta or chili vegan sausage never disappoints.
Given all the negative health implications associated with meat-based sausage, vegan sausage is often a welcomed alternative for vegans and non-vegans alike. Vegan sausage affords you the heavenly indulgence minus the nitrates and saturated fats.
Here are some of our go-to vegan sausage brands.
Beyond Meat
At the top of our list is Beyond Meat Beyond Sausage. The way that Beyond Meat has perfected their sausage in flavor and texture is other worldly. I don’t know what plant-based magic this is, but whatever it is just makes me want it again and again. Offered in 2 flavors, Brat Original and Hot Italian, no meal will be as satisfying without Beyond Meat Beyond Sausage. This sausage offers the absolute best of everything. Made from pea protein, it has 16 grams of protein, is non-GMO, soy-free, gluten free and kosher. Beyond Meat Beyond Sausage has taken us beyond this world.
Field Roast
Coming in second is Field Roast Sausage. Field Roast not only offers you a most deliciously gratifying culinary experience, you also get options. Field Roast Sausages come in 4 flavors including: Bratwurst, Italian, Mexican Chipotle, and Smoked Apple Sage. They are all delectable. Made from vital wheat gluten, Field Roast nails the texture and taste of their sausage to the ground! Each flavor has palatable pairings that seem almost psychic. Field Roast sausage intuitively knows exactly what you perceive to be delicious before you do.
Tofurky
Coming in third is Tofurky, though it could almost tie with Field Roast. Tofurky sausage has been a long time favorite. Made from vital wheat gluten and tofu the texture of Tofurky sausage is a work of art! The only con is that they are a bit high in sodium at about 500 milligrams. However, this is usually just an occasional treat so I don’t get too bent out of shape about it.
I have enjoyed everyone of their 5 flavors including:
- Spinach Pesto (amazing with a vegan scramble)
- Andouille (can you say dirty rice heaven)
- Italian (takes a pasta dish from 0 to 100 real quick)
- Kielbasa (gets along great with potatoes, red cabbage or sauerkraut. Though I just like mine on a hotdog bun)
- Beer Brats (a game day favorite with some grilled peppers and onions)
Lightlife
Next is Lightlife Gimme Lean Sausage. Lightlife’s sausage is made using soy protein concentrate. It has 7 grams of protein and is cholesterol free. Lightlife Gimme Lean Sausage has truly stood the test of time. It’s versatility lends it to being sliced, diced or crumbled.
Most recently Lightlife has launched another plant-based sausage made from pea protein. It comes in two flavors including bratwurst and Italian. It’s not as versatile as the former, but it still hits the mark. With it’s newest addition, I’d have to say that Lightlife has maintained their standing giving us a plant-based sausage with a complex taste and texture that is sure to be among the household favorites.
Frieda’s
Last but definitely no least is Frieda’s (sold by Trader Joe’s, branded as, “Soy Chorizo”). Made from soy protein Soy Chorizo isn’t as meaty in texture as the other brands. However, what it lacks in texture it makes up flavor. Soy Chorizo is so robust in flavor that it can almost be prepared without adding any additional seasoning, depending on your preference of course. It’s perfect in tacos quesadillas, chili, stew, hash and more. Now since it’s carried by Trader Joe’s of course the best part is the price.
Now it’s time for the vegan sausages that make your taste buds say yum. Sausage feast anyone? What’s your favorite brand?
