Zero Waste Is Becoming A Celebrity Trend

Zero waste is now becoming a celebrity trend. Find out why.

In the wake of China waste import bans and the current COVID-19 pandemic the zero waste movement never seemed more necessary. Waste has a detrimental impact on our planet. It generates methane gas, which is explosive and contributes to the greenhouse effect. Besides that waste presents a great nuisance and risk to our health and environment. One memorable example was Surat in India, where a pneumonic plague epidemic broke out in 1994, causing 52 deaths.

ECube Labs reports that overflowing waste bins also impacts your health in the following ways:

  • Ideal breeding ground for bacteria, insects and vermin. Waste increases the risk of you contracting salmonella, which causes typhoid fever, food poisoning, enteric fever, gastroenteritis, and other major illnesses.
  • Air pollutants such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane. As these contaminants are absorbed from lungs into other parts of the body they cause various respiratory diseases and other adverse health effects.
  • Waste collection staff exposure. The risks of picking up and handling overflowing garbage include chronic diseases as well as skin, blood and intestinal infections transmitted by flies feeding on the waste.

This all makes living trash free all the more important. Apparently some celebrities concur.

For starters, Anne Hathaway has recently been putting pressure on the movie industry to become a zero waste industry. Specifically, calling the motion picture industry the worst polluters on the planet, Hathaway is now actively pushing for zero waste film sets.

In recent years, many have echoed Hathaway’s concerns regarding waste produced by the film industry. Consequently, this has led to a number of new environmentally friendly initiatives and recycling programs on film sets. One such program that has already made a significant, positive impact on the movie industry is Los Angeles-based EcoSet Consulting. EcoSet has fostered the reuse of more than 145 tons of discarded material since 2014!

As the zero waste movement continues to gain momentum we look forward to the film industry taking an even more active roll. In the meantime, we look forward to more celebrities joining the cause and influencing the film industry to become more a leader in this movement.

Since zero waste is now becoming a celebrity trend have you been hearing any other buzz about it?
